I saw the Birthday Massacre slay the stage (no pun intended) at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston! The Canadian rock band originated in 1999, bringing what I can best describe as “pastel goth” music to the scene. Their sound is a unique formation that crosses genres, including goth, rock, pop, and electronic elements.

I recommend seeing the Birthday Massacre if you’re looking for some new, unique flair to your music taste and a crowd that’s fun and diverse! The band’s discography is consistent with their purple, pink, and black identity (take a listen and you’ll understand what I mean!) The Birthday Massacre’s newest album “Pathways” was released by Metropolis Records on April 11, 2025, and you can give it a listen HERE.

My reflection: I have been listening to the Birthday Massacre since I was 13 years old, so there’s nostalgia dripping between the notes for me, but the reason I’ve adored this band for years is the true dedication to making music that can’t be replicated, yet enjoyed by anyone. The crowd during this show was one of the most diverse I’ve ever seen, which was unexpected. Of course, there were those decked out in gothic attire and band merch that emulates the the music, but there were others that would have seemed out of place if it weren’t for the inclusion that the music brought. I spoke with a woman about 20 years older than me, who was dancing to her hearts content. She felt the need to give me some advice: dance a lot, wear “mom-clothes” to every show, and don’t worry about what people around you think. Little did she know… I’ve doing this for years LOL… but it led to some insightful conversation which will never be forgotten.

The other part of this show that I loved was watching the band members having the best time on stage and interacting with each other. It was obvious to the crowd that despite having several tour dates, the Birthday Massacre has fun at every show they play. With big facial expressions and hand gestures, the band continuously interacts with each other and the crowd. I’ve seen so many bands just walk on the stage and play with intense faces, almost as if they’re acting, but this felt so different.

My pastel goth dream was fulfilled by seeing the Birthday Massacre perform a full set of classics and new material. Catch them on tour at a date near you!
