Spoondrift & the Spirit of the Jam

Artist: Spoondrift

Spoondrift, a Boston-based jam outfit, weaves psychedelic roots rock with the improvisational heart of the Grateful Dead, and they wear it on their sleeve. According to their Bandcamp presence, they’re labeled as a “Jam band from Boston. Roots rock with a psychedelic twist.”

Fronted by guitarists/vocalists Mike Sim and Jason Oberstein, backed by Ian Svagdis on drums, Alex Lyons on keyboards, and Bob Hovey on bass, Spoondrift radiates synergy. Their take on classics like โ€œHow Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)โ€ blends musicianship with a playful nod to their influences, while originals like โ€œMidnight Stationโ€ show their musical ambitions: psychโ€‘tinted rock rooted in freeโ€‘flowing energy.

Seeing Spoondrift live was so dance-coded. Our group made some memorable moments on the dance floor while Spoondrift played their Grateful Dead-inspired jams. I would love to see them on a larger stage where they can lean into their energetic tunes even further.

Going to this show reminded me about how great it is to support your local live music scene. Supporting local music is important to nurture communities and preserve cultural identity. Local musicians bring unique sounds and perspectives that reflect the spirit of their hometowns. Live performances not only give artists a platform to grow and make connections, but they also support neighborhoods by filling venues, boosting businesses, and creating memorable shared experiences. Whether itโ€™s a cozy coffeehouse set or a high-energy bar gig, showing up for local music means investing in the soul of your city.

As always…

Stay Fabulous,
